Each day a small sample of macrosystis is taken so
that the kids can touch, taste and smell the kelp forest. |

Products that contain carrageenan
A collection of products that contain carrageenan (kelp
extract) are displayed to the classes to aid in their
understanding of the kelp forest as both a habitat and
a natural resource. |

Sea Otter pelt
The sea otter pelt was donated by the Monterey Bay
Aquarium. Students can touch and examine the fur in
order to learn more about sea otter anatomy and adaptations.

Decomposition Chart
This chart was made to clarify the difference between
biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Examples
of various types of waste are displayed with a caption
showing their rate of decomposition. |

Portion of ghost net
This net was removed from around the necks of two
young elephant seals in April of 1997 by the Marine
Mammal Rescue Center. Discussing the net teaches the
class about the dangers of marine debris in the natural
environment. |

pH Tester
A water sample is taken to test for pH and the results
are recorded.

This model is used to give the students an understanding
of how waterways influence the health of the ocean.
