Kelp sample

Each day a small sample of macrosystis is taken so that the kids can touch, taste and smell the kelp forest.

Products that contain carrageenan

A collection of products that contain carrageenan (kelp extract) are displayed to the classes to aid in their understanding of the kelp forest as both a habitat and a natural resource.

Sea Otter pelt

The sea otter pelt was donated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Students can touch and examine the fur in order to learn more about sea otter anatomy and adaptations.

Decomposition Chart

This chart was made to clarify the difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. Examples of various types of waste are displayed with a caption showing their rate of decomposition.

Portion of ghost net

This net was removed from around the necks of two young elephant seals in April of 1997 by the Marine Mammal Rescue Center. Discussing the net teaches the class about the dangers of marine debris in the natural environment.

pH Tester

A water sample is taken to test for pH and the results are recorded.

Watershed model

This model is used to give the students an understanding of how waterways influence the health of the ocean.
