RADAR

Students view and discuss the RADAR display to learn about echolocation, radio waves, foul weather and night navigation.

Global Positioning System

Students are introduced to the concepts of Satellite information technology, latitude, and longitude and computer navigation while viewing one of our GPS monitors inside the cabin of the Catamaran.

Hand-held magnetic compasses

Compass bearings are taken on landmarks on the Santa Cruz coast to be used back at the Education Center during the lesson on triangulation.

Depth gage

A depth reading is taken by each group in the navigation station to be discussed while examining the navigational chart in the Education Center.

Knot meter

The navigation classes take their wind speed measurement from the knot meter on the helm.

Parallel rulers

The class is introduced to applied geometry by learning to use the parallel rulers in conjunction with the navigational chart.

Navigational chart

Students learn about triangulation, applied geometry, mathematics, latitude and longitude and nautical signs and symbols. The compass bearings taken aboard the catamaran are used to find their location on the chart.
