RADAR
Students view and discuss the RADAR display to learn
about echolocation, radio waves, foul weather and night
navigation.

Global Positioning System
Students are introduced to the concepts of Satellite
information technology, latitude, and longitude and
computer navigation while viewing one of our GPS monitors
inside the cabin of the Catamaran. |

Hand-held magnetic compasses
Compass bearings are taken on landmarks on the Santa
Cruz coast to be used back at the Education Center during
the lesson on triangulation. |

Depth gage
A depth reading is taken by each group in the navigation
station to be discussed while examining the navigational
chart in the Education Center. |

Knot meter
The navigation classes take their wind speed measurement
from the knot meter on the helm. |

Parallel rulers
The class is introduced to applied geometry by learning
to use the parallel rulers in conjunction with the navigational
chart. |

Navigational chart
Students learn about triangulation, applied geometry,
mathematics, latitude and longitude and nautical signs
and symbols. The compass bearings taken aboard the catamaran
are used to find their location on the chart. |
